Our trainer suspected she’d been trained with aversive techniques like flooding given how quickly she would shut down. Here we were socializing at an open-air restaurant, but her pulled back ears and stiff body show her discomfort.</image:title>

He has also shown some interest in animal-related engagement, primarily looking at books of “disgusting” or “creepy” animals, such as this great photo book.</image:title>

Results indicated animal-assisted therapy does not induce stress and that therapy dogs may actually be more relaxed after sessions! The study used the diamond model with certified & experienced volunteer teams, but it’s a great start to bringing in support for our work from a welfare standpoint!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog: Puppy Wiggles and Children's Giggles - Why Becoming a Speech Therapy Dog-Handler Team is Simple…But NOT Easy! - I’ve had to be flexible when incorporating Delta into sessions with my younger clients, as she can become excitable in response to their higher energy level. <image:title>Blog: Puppy Wiggles and Children's Giggles - Why Becoming a Speech Therapy Dog-Handler Team is Simple…But NOT Easy! - P.S., It’s been a few months since I originally typed this post... Our obedience trainer showed me a great trick to help Sky stay down during greeting, rubbing an acupressure point on her ear to both calm and slightly distract her as people approach and it works! Most of the time… I started giving Delta Kongs stuffed with sunflower seed butter when she needs to stay in my inner office alone and took the time to practice outside of an actual session to review calm separations. I also remembered I had Dog Appeasing Phermone on hand and started spritzing some on a corner of her bed periodically throughout the day. And I took the Certified Animal-Assisted Intervention Specialist test…and passed!</image:title>

Given that she is smaller and less confident than my Labrador/Great Dane mix Delta, I’ll continue to watch to her signals to see if she feels comfortable lying on children for longer periods and/or graduating to providing the heavy squishes with a gym mat.
